West Hertfordshire District Scouts Frosties Competition 2008
These are the details of this year's Frosties.
Teams
Each troop may enter as many teams of 6 Scouts as they wish. Scouts must be
under 14½ on the day. If you can't gather 6 for a team, try and combine
with another troop. If you can't, then we will accept entries of no fewer than
4 in a team.
Kit
Personal kit is up to you, but Scouts MUST arrive and depart in uniform. They
will be out walking at night (though there won't be a major hike) so please
ensure that all team members have adequate warm clothing, waterproofs and appropriate
footwear.

Dining shelter
Suitable food storage space for basic pantry items for camp
Cooking oil, salt & pepper, ketchup, squash, tea & or coffee, sugar,
biscuits & snack food!
Ingredients for cooked pudding plus preparation and cooking vessels/tools
Water container(s)
Big billy for water heating
Frying pan
2 other good-sized Billies
Usual cooking tools
Plates, bowls, mugs etc
Table(s), benches
Camp cooker and fuel, matches
Bin bags
Saws and axes (to be labelled and handed in at check in), provided they are
trained in their use!
Washing up impedimenta!
First Aid kit
Compass, map and map case
Meals
They will cook breakfast & lunch (including a cooked pudding of their choice,
for which they should supply the ingredients) on the Saturday.
Intention is to cook on open fires (lunch) and cookers (breakfast), but this
is subject to sensible weather conditions and consent from the camp-site. All
other meals will be supplied, though they may be requested to assist in cooking,
serving & clearing away!

Friday
18.00 Check-in of teams commences. Don't forget permission to camp forms. No
PC form = no camp
Once teams have checked in and geared dropped off on site, NO LEADER ASSISTANCE
please. We should have enough adults to offer help, and the scouts will be encouraged
to seek help/advice if needed.
Once all have pitched camp we will supply a snack. Please make sure they have
a good meal before arrival.
22.30 Lights out target time!
Saturday
07.00 Reveille
08.00 Flag-break
Camping standards competition commences
08.30 - 09.00
Teams will be judged on the breakfast they have cooked
09.00 - 12.00
Time for setting up / sprucing up camp-site
Camp gadgets will earn extra points
12.00 -14.00
Prepare, serve and clear away after lunch (judged).
14.00 - 17.30
Challenges
17.30 Evening meal
18.00 Flag-down
Prepare for night exercise
19.00 Teams move off on night exercise after final camp-site judging
23.00 Last teams return to base. Hot drink and bed,
Sunday
07.30 Reveille
08.30 Flag-break
Breakfast followed by striking camp (judged)
11.00 End of judging. Leaders/parents may now rejoin / assist teams to clear
site
12.00 (latest, hopefully earlier so please prime parents to be ready to collect)

Challenges
There will be various challenges issued over the course of the competition as progress and time permit. These may include

Fire lighting knowledge/skills
Wood knowledge /axemanship
Creation of specific gadgets (knots & lashings

Orienteering
Obstacle course
First Aid
Observation skills
Coping with emergency situations
Much depends on the number of teams entered and the number of helpers available! I am also going to introduce some emphasis on special needs (Got to complete my training somehow!!!)
Night Exercise
Will involve a small amount of night navigation, some walking, probably escorted,
and some incidents based on the above list but different from those completed
during the day
Travel - Scouts should meet and be collected from the campsite
