The Green Beret Challenge - 2008

Herts County Competition

14th - 16th November

 

The Green Beret Challenge is a weekend competition for teams of six Scouts. The event is open to all Scout Troops, who may enter as many teams of six as possible. You may combine with other Troops to enter composite teams if you wish.

To achieve the Green Beret Challenge, teams compete in four elements: Orienteering, an Assault course, Challenge Incidents (Daytime) and a Night Exercise.

 

The Challenge is designed to test a group of Scouts through a range of physical and intellectual activities. It also proves to be a significant challenge to Leadership and teamwork skills. IT'S TOUGH !! However, you can survive, provided you are prepared for the weather, and have trained beforehand.

The Challenge is held in November, cold and wet weather is normal for the time of the year, this only adds to the Challenge of GREEN BERET.

 

Assault Course

Teams race around a predetermined course tackling various physical & mental obstacles, some high in the air and others close to the ground. The course takes 1 and a half hours to complete, collecting mud along the way.

 

Orienteering Exercise

Teams use their map and compass skills to navigate around the local woods, looking for orienteering points to clip in the correct place on their score card. The course takes between 1 and 1 and a half hours to complete.

 

Challenge Incidents

Teams visit various bases during the day, whilst waiting to participate in the above two elements. The Bases consist of "Thinking", "Physical" and "Fun" activities.

 

Night Exercise

Teams visit the bases that they missed during the day. The Night Exercise runs from 7pm until 11pm, when the Green Beret Challenge is complete.

 

 

Camping

Everybody on the Challenge sleeps under canvas, so make sure that the Scouts are prepared for the cold nights. Camping is arranged in District Sub camps, this encourages Leaders from the same District to get together and helps the organising team determine where teams are camping.

 

Age Ranges

Each Team is made up of 6 Scouts, up to the maximum age of 14 years. Teams may enter outside these ranges, but will not be eligible to compete for a Trophy. This ruling also applies to visiting teams.

 

Presentations

The presentation ceremony is held on Sunday morning at 11am. Parents are welcome to attend. Final result sheets are certificates are available to all teams at this point.
